GLASS CATWALK

The city of Albi has opened the doors at the new Grand Théâtre to the public, marking the end of the major urban regeneration project. The building is the result of an extensive restructuring and extension programme which has been ongoing in the Cordeliers district since 2009. The key topic in the planning process was to create a culture and congress centre with a cinema complex and underground parking facilities. Dominique Perrault Architecture chose ALUCOBOND Spectra® in combination with a metal canvas for the façade cladding.

A breath-taking combination of iridescent aluminium composite panels and bronzegold- coloured metal mesh has created the building’s identity and character. More than 670 ALUCOBOND® panels were used to clad the façade of the new Grand Théâtre in Cordeliers and passers-by see different colours reflected depending on their viewing angle and the incidence of light.
Tinted glass windows provide excellent thermal and acoustic protection and allow daylight to fall gently in the large entrance area. The façade creates an interplay of orange and copper tones, like a sunny autumn day.

In addition, the building was clad in a custommade copper metal mesh. Perrault’s aesthetic design has virtually transformed the building into a work of art. The comparison to French Haute Couture is apparent: the combination of ALUCOBOND® and metal mesh is not only striking but also lends an elegance and suppleness to the architectural ensemble.
