Melbourne is booming. While the centre is steadily growing upwards, the suburbs are spreading out like a shallow sea of detached houses and gardens. There are few buildings or hills rising above the level landscape. The rectangular grid pattern of roads is only interrupted by large parks and curved, ribbon shaped green spaces – a striking image from the air, but not from the perspective of a pedestrian. There are many leafy spaces in the city and urban area, so this just feels like part of the same. Some sort of highlight is needed to create a recognisable feature. The Presbyterian Ladies College in the suburb of Burwood in conjunction with the module manufacturer, Harwyn, came up with a bright idea: a single storey modular steel building to optimise the use of building space on the 150-year-old campus. The surface area of 240 m² provides adequate space for four classrooms. The modules, including the façades, wood panelling and building technology, were completely prefabricated, and everything was erected in just one day. So far, so pragmatic. However, the school administrators felt it was important to include the school's colour, ocean blue in the new building. It gives a sense of identity and is the colour of the school logo, the school uniforms and the carpets in the classrooms. The façade on the new modules is clad in Ocean Blue ALUCOBOND® tray panels. Since a highlight can only really stand out against an existing backdrop, the colour is combined with silver elements in a stripe pattern, creating an eye-catching effect. This is reminiscent of the horizontal nature in the surrounding area: the structure of façades on the campus, the district’s building typology and the topography of the landscape. The silvery deep blue metal modules look daringly futuristic set in front of the earthy brick buildings, and that is not a pure coincidence. They are part of a strategic plan to build a series of modernisations and new buildings to make the school fit "for 2030 and beyond". So, the modules are a visual highlight and do not only generate a high recognition factor, they also illustrate the traditional school’s future plans.
