West 8 urban design & landscape architecture b.v.

Bureau West 8 landscape architects was founded in 1987 and has grown into an international team of architects, urban planners and industrial designers and artists. Founder Adriaan Geuze is director and chief designer. He also teaches at the architecture department of Delft University of Technology. West 8 designs landscapes, urban plans, squares, parks and gardens.

The basic philosophy of West 8 is deeply rooted in an optimistic view of the contemporary landscape. Landscape, nature and archeology come together and form a vital part of the city. West 8 draws inspiration from the poetic beauty of the careless way in which these different, even opposing worlds connect and become intertwined.

West 8 is guided by simplicity in the design process of urban plans. The grand scale of the surrounding landscape is juxtaposed with the individual domain of the urban dweller. The private space is sharply separated from the public space in the design to create the experience of a contrast.

The realization that the contemporary landscape is largely artificial and consists of various components, which may or may not have been designed, offers West 8 the freedom to create its own narrative spaces here. Ecology, infrastructure, weather conditions, building programs and people are the basic material. The aim is to raise awareness of this in a playfully optimistic way that provokes the urge to conquer and appropriation. Only the gardens are an exception to this. The ingredients of a garden can be enjoyed from a distance, from the paths, the stepping stones, the bridges and the benches. Preferably, the gardens are enclosed and thus shielded from the rest of the world as special, contemplative territories.
