Merbau

Zwaar klassiek hout

Merbau, misschien wel een van de bekendste Maleisische houtsoorten. Het zware en sterke hout heeft een onbetwiste klassieke en stijlvolle uitsraling.

Met name merbauvloeren en deuren zijn in Nederland veel te vinden. Maar het hout is ook zeer geschikt voor hoogwaardig decoratief werk, binnenafwerking, lambrisering gevelbekleding en meubilair. In welke toepassing dan ook, geeft het hout een luxe en kwalitatieve inpuls aan de omgeving.

General description
The scientific name for the timber is Intsia spp, principally Intsia palembanica (Leguminosae). The trees are commonly found throughout Peninsular Malaysia and are mainly distributed in the low-lying areas and along rivers.

It grows in primary or old secondary forests on a wide variety of soils but usually not on a peat. It is sometimes found growing gregariously and occasionally dominantly. The trees of Intsia palembanica are tall with buttresses. It can achieve more than 50m in height and 4m in girth.

Merbau was named as Malaysia’s national tree in August 2019. It was selected as a symbol of integrity of the nation’s sustainable management of its forest and the conservation of the Malaysian biodiversity as well as a symbol of importance to the country’s timber industries.

Timber description
The timber is a heavy hardwood with an air-dry density of 515-1,040kg/m³. The sapwood is pale yellow to light buff and is sharply differentiated from the heartwood which is yellowish to orange brown when fresh, darkening to brown or dark brown on exposure. Texture is rather coarse but even with interlocked grain.

Properties
Merbau is generally easy to work in green conditions and the quality of finish is good. The heartwood of Merbau is durable under exposed conditions and is resistant to termite attacks.

The timber dries rather slowly and its drying time is comparable to timbers like Chengal (Neobalanocarpus heimii) and Balau (Shorea spp). The timber seasons slowly where 13mm boards take about 4.5 months to air dry while 38mm boards take 6 months.

Utilisation
The timber is relatively strong and is most suited for structural applications. Merbau is also a very attractive wood, with its growth ring figure and deep colour making it suitable for interior finishing, panelling, strip and parquet flooring, superior joinery, cabinet making, musical instruments, door and window frames, novelty items, veneers, power transmission poles and for heavy construction. The timber is widely used for the manufacture of reproduction antique furniture as well.

As it has characteristics similar to timber treated with a fire retardant, Merbau is classified as a bushfire-resisting timber in Australia. When the timber does burn, the heat released is within the limits specified in the Australian Standard 3959-2009.
