OBA Next lab Kraaiennest is the newest addition the library family of OBA Amsterdam. Thinking of what the library of the future should look like, it is designed to make a big impact on society and a small impact on the planet. The building is made up of 24 prefabricated and demountable, wooden, biobased and transportable units, arranged around a central “learning hill”. This pink eye catcher not only connects the library to the surrounding square but also serves as a dynamic gathering space for the neighborhood.

Designed specifically for teenagers, this library offers a place where young people can learn to program, hack, and shape their own futures. With vibrant makerspaces and a learning hill filled with cozy nooks and plants, it is a space for creativity, exploration, and education. The library’s design also activates the previously empty square, transforming it into a hub for both learning and community engagement. A solar glass extension—reused from another building—acts as a “living room” for the neighborhood, creating a seamless connection between the square and the library’s indoor atrium.
