Hoofdgebouw & Auditorium Universiteit Leipzig

The main building of the University of Leipzig is inspired by the historic Paulinerkirche, a church which was established in the Middle Ages, but abruptly demolished by the GDR regime in the 1960’s. Throughout its history, the church was used by the University of Leipzig for both, academic and religious purposes.

Formally referring to the demolished University church, the new main building and auditorium/church designed by Erick van Egeraat’s speaks a respectful and expressive language. The design takes into consideration the origins of the church, its current cultural meaning, the historical surroundings of the building, and the collective memory of the city.

The newly formulated façade facing Augustus square and the integration of the building into the city structure are the main exterior features of the design. The façade combines a vertical, multi-faceted composition with an iconic reference to the old church. The ample roof is the climax of the composition. The complex is embedded into the urban fabric by referring to the city’s typical motives: passages and light-courts.

Inside, the complex comprises not only faculty facilities such as seminar rooms offices and computer pools. In reference to the historic church, the building also houses a foyer, a lecture hall and a as a special feature an auditorium/church. The multi-purpose auditorium and church can be used for academic lectures, religious services, concerts and exhibitions. The generous foyer is a semi-open room, which serves as a place of memory and a hub for university life.

The new main building and auditorium will help to redefine the surrounding area by restoring the original homogeneity of Augustus square. It offers a reference point to the past, but also establishes a symbol for the future.
