Überseequartier (Hamburg)

The Überseequartier is part of the transformation of the old harbour area of Hamburg into a mixed-use area known as HafenCity. The position of the Überseequartier in the masterplan is crucial, as it connects the inner city with the river Elbe. ING Real Estate invited EEA to take part in a team of international architects to design two parts of the Überseequartier; the area which is positioned at the waterfront of the Elbe river and the area which represents the centre of the Überseequartier. The waterfront project is a combination of buildings and landscape. A commercial boulevard undulates through the project ending in a waterfront piazza, which brings people close to the water and the experience of the tidal movement of the river. Two apartment towers positioned adjacent to and lifted up from the piazza utilise the public landscape close to the water for terraces and commercial use. The central project is organised around a monumental building and thus embraces the historic hart of the Überseequartier. The architecture is inspired by the architecture of Hamburg, especially the Speicherstadt. The silhouette is strongly pitched to emphasise individual buildings, forming one coherent block. The façades are tectonic, with use of stone and glass, referring to the rich architecture of the Speicherstadt blocks. As part of the large-scale development of the Überseequartier both projects provide an inner city quality to the old harbour area and a new waterfront to the city of Hamburg.
