NL bureau wint Topos European Landscape Award

De Topos European Landscape Award 2004 is gewonnen door Karres en Brands landschapsarchitecten uit Hilversum. Sylvia Karres en Bart Brands ontvingen deze prestigieuze prijs op 16 september in Oslo. De prijs is een initiatief van het vooraanstaande Europese landschapsarchitectuur tijdschrift Topos. De Award wordt uitgereikt aan het bureau dat de ontwerpidentiteit op nationaal niveau vertegenwoordigt en tegelijkertijd invloed uitoefent op internationaal niveau. Het Nederlandse ontwerpbureau ontving eerder dit jaar de Omgevings Architectuur Prijs.

The landscape architecture practice distinguished with the Topos European Landscape Award for 2004, granted by the journal Topos: European Landscape Magazine in collaboration with the nursery Bruns Pflanzen of Bad Zwischenahn, is Karres en Brands of the Netherlands. This is the second time the prize was awarded. In 2002 it went to Tegnestue Stig L. Andersson of Copenhagen (see Topos 40).

The Topos European Landscape Award recognises a landscape architecture firm for work that on the one hand stands for the design approach of a country and on the other exercises an international influence. The Topos Award is thus representative in that it goes to a firm that represents European landscape architecture and gives a major impetus to its development.

The Karres en Brands office in Hilversum has been in operation since 1997. Besides the two owners Bart Brands and Sylvia Karres, there is an interdisciplinary team of 14 planners on staff. Bart Brands studied in Boskoop and Rotterdam, and made decisive contributions to B+B (Bakker en Bleeker, Amsterdam) as a co-worker for many years. Sylvia Karres, after her studies at the Polytechnical School for Garden Design and Landscape Architecture in Boskoop and the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam, was also at B+B, where she worked for ten years. In 1994 she opened her own practice, and since 1997 she has been working with Bart Brands for their firm Karres en Brands landschapsarchitecten. They follow the principle of flexible concepts that adapt to individual needs. In their new design for Gouvernementsplein in Bergen op Zoom (1999), for instance, they did without detailed design drawings; the square developed as a model on the scale of 1:1 (see Topos 35). For the grounds at Federation Square in Melbourne, a complex urban design concept, design and construction also went hand in hand. The installations at Hoge Weide Park in Leidsche Rijn, a former refuse tip, show how the planners respond to the ways in which the users actually use the grounds (see Topos 40).

The Topos Award 2004 was awarded on 16 September in the town hall of Oslo at the annual meeting of ECLAS. Topos 49 will feature a detailed presentation of the Topos Award winners of 2004.
