Winnaars bekend on-line prijsvraag Fused Space

Afgelopen vrijdag zijn de winnaars van de online prijsvraag “Fused Space’ bekend gemaakt. “Hoe kan nieuwe technologie voor de huidige en toekomstige publieke domein van betekenis zijn?". Deze vraag leverde 309 inzendingen uit 35 landen op waarvan 30 inzendingen zijn genomineerd. Uiteindelijke leverde dat 3 winnaars op die tijdens een radio-uitzending bekend zijn gemaakt.

Eerste prijs, Ulrika Wachtmeister, Sweden Transitions
This is a conceptual project exploring the domain in between the private and the public, the virtual and the physical, memories and present, through the development of a fictional company offering alternative spaces for commemoration and mourning. With secularisation and globalisation new burial traditions have begun to evolve challenging the monopoly on afterlife once held by the church. Nowadays the trend is to have ones ash spread outside of public spaces like cemeteries in favour of places more directly connected to the life of the deceased. The spreading of a deceased ash is not connected to a specific religion and is gaining in popularity among all groups of society. The non-identity of the nomad in a mobile society corresponds with the anonymous grave that disappear into somewhere or other, however the need for places to remember is still a vital factor for those left behind when someone passes away.

Nowadays there exist several commercial companies offering alternatives to conventional graveyards and memorials. This conceptual project was developed to explore the relation between memory, death and capital, as well as the relation between the private and the public, through the fictional company Pepperholm Ltd. The company offers personal memorials on the internet linked to a light installation on the artificial island Pepparholm in Öresund. The company idea speculates on the individual's wish to have their ash spread and the loved ones need for a manifestation of lives gone.

OPTIONALTIME/ public expanse uses new new media to make a non-linear experience tangible in public space. This infuses the public to understand their surroundings in a more dynamic way. It appears as a big mirror that in fact is an interactive movie. Before exploring the relationship between new media and public space, we'd like to briefly address the state of 'new media' today and more specifically, the use of 'virtual space'. Virtual space is generally defined as a 'space' created by a network of computers or more recently, networked mobile (communication) devices. While it is very interesting to investigate this new non-physical space, generally by doing so the 'real' space is taken for granted. In fact, in most cases physical spatial metaphors are being used to describe and control the virtual environments (like the way we still use an old-fashioned desktop as the main computer interface). This is limiting. We think a more interesting perspective is to turn it around; let (the rules of) virtual space define physical space. Suddenly the space would become dynamic instead of static, and time could become non-linear instead of linear. To achieve such a shift in perception we need new tools, new new media. In this proposal we use a yet to be defined medium: interactive movie.

When observing the use of the public space today, it is apparent how most behaviors circle around time. Time is in many ways the most influential navigation system for public space. Yet time is generally considered to be linear, and we believe this linearity limits the understanding of the space itself. What new new media can do in this case is create an experience of non-linearity. This might broaden our notion of the possibilities of (public) space and thereby inspire to a more dynamic use of it. OPTIONALTIME/ public expanse has the appearance of a big mirror placed in a public space. The public will see itself reflected, but the reflected image does not obey the common laws of linearity. In fact it is not a mirror, but a movie, an interactive movie. The public is offered a role in this movie, not only because their physical image is part of it, but more importantly by giving them the possibility to play with the image, to direct it. [Now it is possible to place a passerby back into your (mirrored) reality while he's already left the scene. Now people appear by your side that are not in your reality, or maybe have been there, but at another moment in time.] This mirror reflects public space with a sense of magic and entertainment. It enables you to interact with yourself; now, a while ago, and in action that did not take place yet. We use technology to make this non-linear experience tangible.

Background

The perception of a place is highly influenced by the media portrayal about and within it. The big posters, directions and signs guide us, subconsciously in the urban landscape. Being a tourist, we follow these features like ants following the pheromones left by others before them. The underground map shows the topological relations between places, giving a very distorted picture of the physical reality. Distances are measured in connections, not kilometres. Even as a city dweller, if you were to be dropped half a mile from your normal route to work, you would be lost.

Concept

Urban Eyes attempt to provide an alternative view to the city, using pigeons as the messengers and the CCTV camera networks overlooking the main streets and back alleys as their eyes.

The Data protection act in 1998 in UK made it possible for anyone to request for the CCTV camera feed when the camera would be filming them. Should people begin to ask for this in a frequent fashion, it would be imaginable that companies would automate the requests to be dealt with online. Combined with all the traffic cameras and personal webcams, the cities are being monitored by a huge network of accessible cameras.

Over Fusedspace
Fusedspace is een internationale on-line prijsvraag voor ideeën over inspirerende toepassingen van nieuwe technologie in het publieke domein. Het totale prijzenbedrag bedraagt 17.500 euro. De prijsvraag was uitgeschreven voor kunstenaars, architecten, ontwerpers en iedereen die zich door het onderwerp aangesproken voelt. Fusedspace is een initiatief van Stroom haags centrum voor beeldende kunst, de Informatie WerkPlaats Den Haag, SKOR Stichting Kunst en Openbare Ruimte, Premsela stichting voor Nederlandse vormgeving in samenwerking met V2_ Instituut voor de Instabiele Media, DEAF Dutch Electronic Arts Festival en Doors of Perception.

Fusedspace
Informatie- en communicatietechnologie hebben de manier waarop we omgaan met de openbare ruimte wezenlijk veranderd. We kijken er niet meer van op als we op straat iemand tegen niemand zien praten. Overal kan informatie worden opgevraagd over het weer, de files en historische informatie over het oude pand waarvoor we staan. Technologie verandert niet alleen de manier waarop we de openbare ruimte gebruiken maar heeft ook de virtuele uitbreiding hiervan veroorzaakt. Dankzij technologieën als internet, sms, mobiele telefonie, gps kunnen we vrijelijk informatie uitwisselen en een gemeenschapsleven op het web ontwikkelen. Je kunt er mensen ontmoeten, een betekenisvolle positie innemen en gedachten uitwisselen. In je eigen kamer is de wereld waarin je beweegt oneindig veel groter en drukker bevolkt dan wanneer je de straat op gaat. Bieden deze ontwikkelingen nog onvermoede mogelijkheden ten gunste van het publiek domein?
