HOUSING DEVELOPMENT KRØYERS PLADS

The fairytales of the Danish H. C. Andersen hold a special place in the world of literature. Through his stories and the characters in them he creates a world in which fantasy and reality coexist without contradiction. In the same way we live our lives today in the real world, yet never stop dreaming of miracles...

When flying above the city one can see the controverses of Copenhagen. The impressive view is characterised by horizontal lines, the most dominating of which is the sea on the horizon. This view is interrupted by only a few significant vertical elements: towers, both historic and contemporary. The intimate and peaceful narrow streets, cobbled squares, dark brown roofs, traditional materials with intensive colours; all suggest a rich, exciting, fairytale-like atmosphere in the city where anything (and everything) could happen. Once at the seaside the scale changes and the horizon widens. It's endlessness is like that undefined border within the fairy story between the real and the surreal - this is one reason why people are attracted to the sea. In such an environment references to dwarves and sorcerers do not seem so startling. The proposed buildings are strongly influenced by the traditional pitch roofed buildings, creating a strong contextual reference to their vicinity. But by stretching, twisting and distorting them in three dimensions new shapes are created, allowing freedom of the imagination without limiting the future inhabitants' association with those forms. One might envisage them as a group of crystals created by the hands of giants, or as dwarves in enormous hoods. The inner volumes - the crystals - containing the flats are fully glazed providing marvellous views in all directions. They are wrapped in a cladding system formed of louvers and grilles providing sun and visual protection from outside. The materials applied make references to the earth: with copper red, terracotta and natural slate contrasting with the glitter of stainless steel. The buildings sit on a tilted platform thus allowing more exposure from the seaside perspective. The towers are rotated to maximise the views towards the sea and the harbour. The possible views and the random open and closed surfaces create an interesting contrast between the infinite view of the sea and the neighbouring towers closed volumes. The tilted platform is an undulating in-situ reinforced concrete slab forming not only an artificial landscape but also providing shelter from trespassing circulation. The retail functions are situated beneath this platform with frontage to the street as well as to an atrium; and a fully glazed façade to the public café-restaurant offers charming views. It is proposed that the small bay to the south east of the site be utilised as a marina for the inhabitants adding an additional feature to the complex. As an alternative to the inevitably quicker prefabricated structural technology, the consideration of in-situ structures could allow the introduction of alternative technical solutions such as the concrete activation. The feature of this system is energy efficient operation alongside higher comfort level for the inhabitants. The power supply to the building complex, as well as the technical systems for the buildings, as a basic concept, shall be coordinationed with the architectural and environmental concepts. The location, form and function of these buildings forecast the necessity of a reliable utility network that provide an economic and controllable energy supply system.
