Clarion Hotel Energy Stavanger (Ches)

If you come to Stavanger in Norway, you will find an idyllic landscape of fjords, lakes and islands dotted with the city’s whitewashed houses. Despite this tranquil appearance, Stavanger citizens made a living from industry for a long period of time. Thanks to fishing, which stimulated the canning and shipbuilding industries, the city experienced a boom two hundred years ago. Over the last fifty years, Stavanger has become an administrative centre with a population of 142,000. Nonetheless, the city's identity is still firmly anchored to its industrial past. When Clarion Hotels commissioned Snøhetta, a renowned Norwegian architectural firm, to create a new building in 2012, they drew upon the town’s identity as a design feature. Like a ship with its bow rising, the Clarion Energy Hotel now seems to float over the city. A concrete base, in which the public areas of the hotel, such as a restaurant and a congress centre are located, lies beneath the structure. Two oblong volumes containing 410 rooms intersect in a cross formation, and the number of storeys increases from five in the centre to seven at the outer edge. The façade refers to the old canneries and is made of ALUCOBOND® panels in naturAL Reflect brushed and anodized look. The matt and mirror surfaces of the asymmetrical diamond-shaped façade elements generate varying degrees of reflection; this creates an elegant, mutable appearance which seems to merge with both the sky and the winter snows. In the interior, the architects opted for Nordic clarity, contrasting grey and white with a lot of wood and splashes of bright colours. In terms of technology, the building makes a clear statement about the direction Norway is taking today. Despite being an energy-rich country, Norway is fully committed to climate protection, and the building industry is included. The hotel is one of the first to be built to Norwegian Energy Class A standards, and it marks the beginning of the entire eco-campaign by Nordic Choice Hotels, to which the Clarion Hotels belong. The campaign’s aim is to significantly reduce energy, water and plastic consumption, and to cut back on CO2 emissions, chemicals and waste. The Hotel Clarion Energy is a flagship setting sail for new climate goals.
