A research by Design project for Dutch public space of abusive bicycle parking. This project looked for a way to integrate underground space as public space with the square of future Hub station of Amsterdam.

From advocate to school boys, bicycle in Amsterdam is the most popular local transportation method. Still bicycle has not the most brilliant face to show when it is parked in a public space. Any organization who seeks international representation tends to avoid embracing public bicycle parking in front of their premises. Yet the key to user friendly facility is still to guarantee good accessibility to any bicycle users. Ambition of the project was very clear; to give bicycle a right face in the city, when it is parked.

The project is commissioned by the Zuid As development Corporation. The program demanded 2500 bicycle parking places under the ground, extension of car parking for the adjacent World Trade Center facility at the -2 level and the remodeling of the public space Zuidplein, which is expected to become square for new main High Speed Train station of Amsterdam. The research concludes to integrate underground with the ground level rather than isolate them. Zerodegree Architecture designed a cut on the ground-surface, attractive opening that leads cyclists to climb down towards the underground bicycle parking. Small public programs such as shops and communal exhibition spaces are injected adjacently. Bicycle parking can be programmed in curious manner such as man/women separate, cabinet or stands, membership for shower space and so on.
