Villa Samadhi, An oasis hidden in the city centre

1 december
Tucked away in an upscale residential neighbourhood just ten minutes from the city centre, Villa Samadhi is a serene, 5-star boutique escape designed as an urban sanctuary. The resort is formed by 21 individually crafted suites, each meant as a contemporary interpretation of a tropical villa. All rooms are connected to the central connecter of the retreat. The Lagoon, a curving pool discreetly hidden behind a tall bamboo fence and timber gate, amplifying the sense of privacy and seclusion.

The smallest suites, starting at approximately 56 m², offer a separate bedroom, bathroom, and balcony. Ground-floor units open directly onto the lagoon, while the larger suites at approximately 185 m² include private plunge pools, kitchenettes, and small gardens. The architecture embraces a palette dominated by tropical hardwoods, polished concrete, and bamboo, producing an interior that is both raw and refined.

The restaurant, located deeper within the landscaped greenery, is accessible only via a narrow jungle path, reinforcing the retreat-like atmosphere. Inside, a polished concrete floor is highlighted by a hexagonal bamboo pattern, forming an impressive centrepiece. The ceiling is made of folded plywood panels, creating a sculptural play of depth and shadow elevating the overall ambience.

The majority of the hotel’s interior is crafted using salvaged Malaysian hardwoods, combined with concrete flooring and white plaster walls. The entrance is framed by intricately carved timber doors featuring traditional motifs and Chinese symbolism, highlighting the cultural layering of the design. Beyond these doors, guests enter spaces built with Malaysia’s most renowned hardwood species:

  • Chengal - highly durable, rich brown timber traditionally used for Malay houses; excellent weathering performance.
  • Balau - dense, strong, and golden-brown; commonly used for heavy construction and exterior applications.
  • Merbau - reddish-brown with high dimensional stability; valued for flooring and joinery.
  • Teak - admired for its grain, longevity, and resistance to moisture; ideal for luxury finishes.
  • Meranti -  versatile and widely used for interior joinery, panelling, and decorative work.
Together, these timbers create a naturally warm and comfortable Malaysian atmosphere. The interplay of natural materials, handcrafted detailing, and spatial intimacy results in a retreat that feels like a quiet oasis of tropical architecture in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
