Smartply vormt solide basis voor biobased gebouw

In Oosterwolde, a place in the Frisian municipality of Ooststellingswerf, the Biosintrum has been standing for a number of years. This is a knowledge center for biobased materials and circular construction. The Biosintrum describes itself as the beating heart of the 'biobased economy'. In addition, the center is part of an ecological landscape where companies work together with students to come up with new smart ideas, products or solutions for a sustainable future. It is the meeting place for education, business and government in the field of the biobased economy.
Sustainable knowledge partner
Oldenboom specializes in biobased and renewable materials for the shell of buildings. As an award-winning expert in the market, they advise on the use of different types of materials. They can then supply these materials to their customers to make a sustainable impact in construction. In this way, Oldenboom is not only the supplier, but also a full-fledged sparring partner.
Oldenboom was closely involved in the realization of the Biosintrum in Oosterwolde. The choice of materials and construction, among other things, were coordinated down to the last detail by Halbe Vlietstra, Consultant at Oldenboom. “The knowledge center shows example projects for biobased and circular construction. That is why it is important to select the right materials that meet the associated requirements,” he says.
Construction and vapor barrier
The knowledge center was created using materials such as cellulose insulation, recycled denim for sound insulation and SMARTPLY OSB panels in the construction. All these materials represent sustainable choices that fit the purpose of the Biosintrum. At the same time, this involves specific requirements.
“Apart from the constructive function of SMARTPLY OSB MAX, the boards must also have an airtight and windtight, vapor barrier function. We know from experience that problems can arise with OSB as an airtight layer,” says Vlietstra. “However, with these SMARTPLY OSB MAX sheets we are assured of continuous quality and reliability. The blower door tests, or QV10 measurements, also showed that at the time.”
Preview function
With the construction of the Biosintrum, all parties involved, including Oldenboom, are showing how different construction can be done in the Netherlands. Today, the knowledge center therefore sets a new standard for the next generation of buildings. With the help of, among other things, close relationships with the business community and education, the future of biobased construction in the Netherlands is being further shaped. In 2019, the building was awarded the Dutch Building Prize.
The choice for SMARTPLY MAX OSB fits well within that picture. The reliable properties of the sheet material take away all concerns regarding the construction and the lifespan of the building. Because SMARTPLY has a continuous supply of the same quality of raw materials, the same benefits are guaranteed across the board. It is partly for this reason that Oldenboom has been working with SMARTPLY for more than 20 years.
Vlietstra: “What's special about the project is that 80 percent of the building consists of biobased materials. That is a good score, especially since the project was completed about four years ago. More and more attention is being paid to the way we build and from Oldenboom we also think it is important to work sustainably. This building therefore has an important exemplary function that we are happy to support.”
