RECOGNITION AND REPLICATION

Kaunas, Lithuania is, once again, the site of anew project. The pace of development in thiscity is astonishing, as are the demands on architecture.The building fabric in Kaunas is verymixed, featuring technological cutting-edge,noteworthy historical and mundane examples. Itcan be ramshackle, refurbished or refined, it canbe rural, suburban and urban. All the contrastswhich currently characterize the Baltic Statesare revealed in Kaunas. Finding the right architecturalbalance here is a difficult task. ArchitectsNatkevicius and Partners must have facedthis dilemma when dealing with the prominentlypositioned brownfield site. There are two strategic sides: one facing the river and the otheroverlooking a pedestrian bridge leading fromthe historic city centre to a popular recreationalarea on a verdant island in the river. The site isurban on two sides and set amongst a muddleof structures. The architects opted for duplicationto ensure good recognition value. Theypositioned two buildings, one seven-storey andone eight-storey, pivoted slightly in relation toeach other, to create one frontage parallel tothe river and the other following the line of theroad running diagonally alongside it. The buildings’different orientations are drawn togetherby the square between them and bordered bya canopy. As daylight is in short supply during aLithuanian winter, the architects clad both buildingsin the standard glass façade. In front of this,they set pilasters clad in ALUCOBOND® PLUSnaturAL Brushed to structure the façade. Thesepilasters group the floors together in the colossalorder: they span two storeys and mergethem into one unit. The buildings do not seem toloom so high above the skyline are given the balanced,classical proportions of a cube. By doublingthe building volumes and adding the rowsof brushed matt pilasters, an understated calm iscreated in the cityscape. The colours reflected inthe aluminium integrate the complex into the surroundingsand yet deliver high recognition value.The building mediates between the monolithicappearance of the neighbouring modern glassbuilding and the historic rendered façades ofthe old town. The architects have also created afunctional link: The floor plan layout is designedfor small and large rental units, as well as retailand restaurant space on the ground floor. Calmand flexible, that seems to be the perfect balancehere. Because in riverside Kaunas, changeis the only constant.
