FORWARDS, FURTHER, FASTER

When the engine revs to more than 5,000 rpm and up to 300 horsepower propels the boat across the water, when it ploughs a lengthy bow wave through the lake and wind brings tears to the eyes, then MIZU customers are probably very happy. The company markets high-performance motorcycles and motorboats, it also sells accessories and provides technical services for maintenance and tuning. The brand promises power and speed. An adrenaline kick with the roar of a motor instead of the romance of setting sail. A new generation of boats has already been given the go ahead to compete at the annual Mizu Cup on Lake Constance and perform in full-throttle mode. The main aim of the new showroom in Hilzingen is to communicate this power to the outside world, and offer a space where high-speed sports yachts can be admired. The building is located a few kilometres from Lake Constance, but directly on the A81, so fans only have to take their foot off the accelerator shortly before arriving at the dealership. The architecture used in the building itself is kept deliberately plain and concentrates on the fundamental message, forward momentum. The entire boat hall with its panoramic glazed frontage is like the prow of a ship lightly tilted towards the road. The workshop and offices behind it are very distinct in terms of colour and material used on the façade. The hall is clad in long and slender urban Jet Black ALUCOBOND® elements, folded sharply inwards and ending at the façade corners in narrow mitred joints. The logo in cursive lettering is cut out of two façade elements by CNC to reveal red underlying the surface. LEDs behind the characters emphasize the “streaks of velocity” in the logo. Although the ALUCOBOND® façade looks plain and casual, it was a real innovation and a technical challenge. The building’s façades, which tilt 7° and have open joints, are mounted on a timber substructure. This required extremely accurate cutting, additional sealing during assembly and new production and assembly processes. The result is a sleek, timber and ALUCOBOND® waterproof shell: a successful and fitting experiment for a company which plans to send its own build of boats out onto Lake Constance in the near future. Now this showroom means MIZU has launched a vessel on dryland; other exciting launches are sure to follow quickly, but these will be in the water instead.
