Spectra-cular swimming

Riedlingen, a small Swabian town, has everything you could possibly want for a few leisurely days in summer: charming squares in the historic old town, a farmers’ market and shops where you can browse or buy. Culture and good food is also on offer, to say nothing of storks on the town hall. The Danube flows through the fields here at a leisurely pace, forming small areas of shingle and islands for balmy evenings. In 2018, a modern swimming pool opened allowing Riedling-en’s citizens and guests to exercise and relax while enjoying views of the municipal forest. Or more precisely, the treetops in those woods. The site slopes downwards to the Danube so that the ground-floor entrance and swimming pool level on the valley side seem to be a floating upper storey. The building appears to hover above the ground because 4A Architects selected ALUCOBOND® warm orange-red spectra Cupral panels to clad the roof edges and upper floor; the basement is painted anthracite grey. It is no coincidence that yet another building in Swabia basks in gleaming spectra Cupral. This special, earthy-coloured iridescence, which vacillates between vivid and subtle tones depending on the sunlight’s intensity, echoes the colour of the region’s historic roofs. The roofs on the slender half-timbered buildings in the old town also alternate between several shades of orange, red and brown and, along with the Danube`s green floodplains, add the finishing touches to the stereotypical countryside summer idyll. Although the architects use the façade to ensure the large-scale building is integrated coherently into the landscape and into the historic cityscape, the architecture is nonetheless modern. Incidentally, the swimming pool interior is equally modern and flashes of grass-green appear between exposed concrete and matt, anthracite coloured, large-format tiles. The architects also made some daring technical decisions: the steel structure made of double T-girders spans 18 metres over the swimming pool and rests on extremely delicate supports in front of the glazed panoramic frontage. This means that the view is largely unobstructed on three sides and large skylights in the roof cast light on the surface of the water. The result is a swimming pool building which looks lofty and spacious with an astonishing light and airy ambience. It is more like a covered outdoor pool – truly spectra-cular.
