Elegance and modern design

The Hotel InterContinental Ljubljana opted for glazed titanium steel in its bathrooms

The Hotel InterContinental, the tallest building in Ljubljana, has stood at the centre of the popular, urban centre of the Slovenian capital since 2017. The 5-star establishment combines homely elements with modern, soft design. In order to achieve an architecturally harmonious overall concept, the Munich interior architecture offices of wrightassociates, which was responsible for the design, installed washbasins and baths by Bette in the luxurious marble bathrooms.

The Hotel InterContinental Ljubljana in the Slovenian capital can easily be seen from a distance: the exterior façade of the 21-storey building is completely encased in glass. Floor-to-ceiling windows dominate the appearance of the building, which is only a stone's throw from the main station, well-known Tivoli Park and the shopping and business district. The 5-star hotel opened in 2017, and offers tourists and business travellers a balanced combination of modern design and timeless elegance.

With 165 standard and executive rooms plus 17 suites, guests have the choice of three different room categories. For business travellers, there are conference rooms on the 19th floor and event spaces in the hotel basement. The rooftop restaurant, a lounge and the spa area with an indoor infinity pool are perfect for relaxing high above the city rooftops – and the breathtaking view is included.

The interior architecture concept is based on homeliness and rounded shapes
The Munich design offices of wrightassociates interior architecture GmbH was responsible for the entire interior architecture of the InterContinental Hotel Ljubljana. The design concept leads guests through the various public areas, linking the lobby reception to the Bloom Lounge, which was created as an extension of the lobby, as a patisserie and as a dining bar. "Round shapes such as circles and spheres are repeated throughout the design concept as abstract interpretations of nearby Tivoli Park, and are seen throughout the hotel interior as iconic elements. This inviting design language welcomes the guest in the form of a light installation in the entrance area of the hotel, and is also seen in various glass panels and wood perforations," explains Sonja Wright, Design Director at wrightassociates. On the 20th floor, the B-Restaurant and B-Bar and their roof terraces create an energetic yet relaxing club atmosphere. The material language of the entire interior architecture is based on craftsmanship, quality and the incorporation of the local identity, while the design of the individual guest rooms is focused on an exclusive homeliness combined with luxurious comfort. "This design approach is echoed, for instance, in the elegant textiles in the guest rooms and bathrooms," she adds of the design.

The 165 guest rooms are in warm shades, with light wood floors providing a contrast to dark wood surfaces. Combined with the glass art, which was also designed by wrightassociates, they create a unique colour and material concept that is enhanced by the floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of daylight. The colour world of the rooms is repeated in the bathrooms with large sandstone tiles.

"We quite deliberately chose a soft design language to contrast with the edginess of the glass façade here in Ljubljana. This design language was continued in the guest bathrooms to ensure that the design language remained consistent throughout with no breaks," says Ms. Wright.

For the washbasins and baths, Ms. Wright and her team opted for the design competence of the bathroom specialist Bette of Delbrück in Germany. "We chose washbasins and baths by Bette because with their filigree curves they are the perfect match for our overall project, and we were convinced by the modern, clear lines of the washbasins."

For the hotel management, the design and quality aspects were key considerations in the choice of the products, but so too was the material of the washbasins and baths. Bette bathroom products in glazed titanium steel are particularly robust, durable and easy to clean, and the hygiene properties of the material testify to its suitability for use in the hotel industry.

Sculptures in the bathroom
The washbasins in the BetteArt series are one of the choices. With their extremely filigree, narrow rim, the 80-cm wide countertop washbasins are reminiscent of bowls that are used to collect water. The gentle lines and sculptural character add an individual touch to the bathrooms in this luxury hotel, and fill them with an exclusive aura. Both the bathrooms in the standard and executive rooms and the suites were fitted with monumental undermount bathroom furniture in marble which shows the filigree countertop washbasins in glazed titanium steel at their very best and adds an architectural counterpoint.

The design language of the BetteArt washbasins is the work of the Tesseraux und Partner design studio of Potsdam, which was also responsible for the design-related bath of the same name. It is used in the bathrooms of the standard rooms and, thanks to the seamless, barrow bath rim, creates an extremely delicate effect. The generous corner radii and conical skirt are perfect for a long soak admiring the fabulous views of the city. Wright: "The free-standing bath in the same modern design as the washbasins completes the overall concept in the bathroom."

Three different bath types
In addition to the free-standing BetteArt baths in all guest bathrooms with daylight, the interior bathrooms with no daylight also have built-in baths from the Bette One series. The characteristic element in these is the comfortable, wide all-round rim that makes a comfortable support for the lower arms or can be used to hold bath utensils.

The interior architects also opted for Bette One baths for the bathrooms of the Executive Suites, although in this instance they are in the exceptional Highline version, which has a half-height skirt that gives the bath an especially elegant character. In Ljubljana, the lower half of the semi-built in bath was framed in marble, which, together with the monumental undermount furniture of the washbasins, creates a consistent and sophisticated bathroom.

In the Presidential Suite, the designers chose a different design language and a different bath that in this case was ideal for bathing à deux with a view of the Old Town. The decision was made for the Bette Starlet Oval Silhouette, another luxurious free-standing bath. The typical features of this bath are the clear, symmetrical lines and conical, seamlessly joined skirt in glazed titanium steel. Thanks to the generous volume, comfortable slants for the back at both ends and the centrally positioned outlet, guests in the Presidential Suite can share a bath in complete comfort. The luxurious comforts of this suite are enhanced by a number of features that include an open fireplace and a combined sauna/shower.

Sven Rensinghoff, marketing director at Bette: "Glazed titanium steel is an unbeatable material for hotel bathrooms. This is also confirmed by the baths and washbasins used here that fulfil the high design standards of both the interior architects and of the hotel management with regard to ease of cleaning and hygiene."
