HOUSE FOR CHILDREN

The extension to the striking existing building of the kindergarten in Schifferstadt is an understated but self-confident structure. The combination of ALUCOBOND® panels in different heights and coloured ventilation windows gives the façade an intriguing appearance. Light-flooded rooms as well as exciting connections between the interior and exterior are achieved by the floor-to-ceiling glazing. To meet the short seven-month construction deadline, a pre-fabricated timber- frame construction was used. The passive house certified, transom construction with threefold glazing as well as a rear ventilated façade, featuring ALUCOBOND® panels and additional thermal insulation, lead to an en-ergetically optimal envelope with relatively slim construction depth. Whilst construction work for the extension was underway, the technical installations in the existing building were upgraded considerably in terms of energy consumption. The old atmospheric gas boiler was replaced by a modern condensing boiler. The old ventilation system without heat recuperation was dismantled and the existing rooms were linked to the new ventilation system with maximum heat recuperation and so- lar-energy central hot water system. The extension incorporates two new group rooms with connecting room, a multi-purpose room, toilet and baby changing facilities, a dormi- tory and side rooms. To meet higher requirements the kitchen in the existing building was re-designed and enlarged by an additional utility room. The staff rooms were adapted to satisfy current regulations. Finally, the out- door playgrounds were redesigned.
