Education needs change

Our worldview is in constant flux: The location and the perspectives we choose have a bearing
on how we reflect things and how these things appear in different lights. Perspectives and positions change continuously as they do at the newly built 12,500 m² Campus Jourdan building in Paris. Not only are the contours of the building seemingly fluid, its interior offers numerous perspectives linked via a flowing succession of diverse stairways, arcades, galleries and rooftop terraces. The façade also varies depending on its users and its surroundings. The glazed ground-floor focuses on functional and visual links between the busy road and the greenery in the rear courtyard. Vertical slats, comprising different textured materials, Quartz Grey ALUCOBOND® tray panels on one side and rough wood on the other, are positioned in front of the upper storeys. The slats can be adjusted manually to alter the view of the outside world and the amount of natural light in every room. Approximately 1,200 students, teachers and employees from two institutes of higher education keep the building in perpetual motion. This can be observed on the exterior since the angle of the slats dictates the intensity and colour of the light reflected on the façade. Areas where the façade does not move also alter: glossy surfaces in the inner courtyard, on the terraces and galleries reflect the movements, colours and lights around them. The façade and the world it mirrors are in constant flux.
