A growing number of people live in a permanent care environment that rarely offers a ‘none care’ moment where the focus is not on their limitations, but on their capabilities: People with multiple mental handicaps and people with far advanced dementia. Regular destinations like zoos, theme parks or playgrounds do not cater to their specific needs and relatively immobile condition.

This project offers an environment that does exactly that: Activating the senses in an attractive manner and on levels specifically suitable for this audience. It offers an outdoor and indoor series of sensory experiences that playfully appeals to visitors with the mental capabilities of children between 0 and 5 years old.

This is achieved with interactive environments equipped with lights, textures, smells, audio, taste in different thematic constellations. Iconic imagery, sounds and objects appeal to the older memories still present in the minds of visitors with advanced dementia. A flat floor theatre for a small public allows for very individual theatre experiences. In a greenhouse & cooking area offers the possibility for the visitors and their caretakers to learn to prepare more diverse food for those who have very particular diets.

This project is a further elaboration of an already existing destination. The Client has a number of objectives:

To offer a more individual experience to visitors, catering even more to each visitor’s personal needs
To create the right circumstances to gain knowledge on how experiences can be further improved
To develop specific products so this audience can enjoy these moments more regularly in their own familiar environment.

The project will be located on the generously wooded grounds of a large Heath care organization in The Netherlands. The surrounding landscape, consisting of heathlands, sand dunes and woodlands, provides a pleasant environment and its indigenous vegetation cover the new building and even continue into the building.

The heart of the indoor part of the building is formed by a multifunctional atrium. Here the reception, gift shop, lunch- and playing tables, as well as a very iconic central round sofa are located. The atrium enjoys an abundance of daylight and offers clear views to the nature outside. The functional organization of the single level building, as well as its architecture, is exceptionally simple and recognizable. There are no corridors, and as little doors as possible. This way the visitors can always orient themselves well, and if not, they automatically end up in the same central atrium.

This atrium is surrounded by so called ‘experience theatres’ each of which is a closed space where the scenery, music, sounds, light and video effects, the game material and the activities are completely self-contained and can be technically controlled. That is to optimally set, for different target groups, the aimed stimulated senses.

The flexible and adaptable building will be constructed of a combination of rammed earth, prefabricated glue less cross laminated wood walls, a greenhouse glass roof and will be mostly covered by earth. A combination of low tech and high-tech solutions will minimize the energy needs of the building and maximize solar gain and local power generation.
