POSTMODERN SECURITY CENTRE

Set in the picturesque Hegau landscape, the new building has created a distinctive fire and rescue centre, which now also provides space for two district fire brigades, the local Red Cross and the German lifeguard association, DLRG. On the one hand, the rescue centre’s two diminutively proportioned wedge-shaped volumes fi t in with the scale of the landscape and the village, and on the other hand, their matching shapes underline the complex’s communal use. The upward sweep of the roof edge symbolizes the fi re brigade’s dynamism and speed, and the corresponding ascending roof on the seminar building forms a link with the environment. The impressive drill tower presents a vertical contrast to the horizontality of the wedge-like forms and creates a prominent architectural landmark. The depot has fi ve parking spaces, a wash
bay and a maintenance workshop for fire hoses, respiratory equipment and other general requirements. A fi re drill tower and sanitary, training and storage facilities are additional amenities. The wedge-shaped design of the building has been optimised to facilitate the best possible use of space in individual sectors where high ceilings are required. A classic black and white palette is the basis of the contrasting colour concept. The only colour accent is the fi re engine red of the vehicles and the exterior ALUCOBOND® cladding. The building layout includes a “continuou path” for all call out procedures (from parking to deployment) to ensure operational effectiveness and to avoid any obstructions or bottlenecks. A department for the local German Red Cross Association has been set up with completely independent means of access. Hilzingen Fire Station has two motorway tunnels in its command area and the disaster response vehicle for the Constance district is based at the centre as well.
