Shimmering like a lake

Architectural design of the Seven Clans Casinos, Red Lake followed the wishes of community elders of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians who own and operate this casino-hotel complex located in north-central Minnesota on the reservation’s southern edge.
The architects wanted the facility’s design to respect tribal heritage, to celebrate the area’s woodlands culture in which the lake itself plays a major role, but also to exude an atmosphere of fun and relaxation.

The overall casino complex resembles a traditional tribal “longhouse” – or gathering place – while incorporating contemporary building materials such as ALUCOBOND^®and a sophisticated colour-changing LED exterior lighting system.

“ALUCOBOND^®spectra is a very eye-catching material which could be shaped into a form that appears to undulate,” said Wedge. “Different colours are viewed from different angles. The colour scheme ranges from blue to green. We wanted to recreate the shimmer of the lake on a bright, sunny day.”
DSGW Architect’s planning process included input from tribal community members in addition to tribal stakeholders. During construction, the project generated construction jobs, half of them going to tribal members.
