Several shades of gold shimmer from darkto light, metallic to rose, depending on theway the sun hits the new Ngoolark StudentServices building. It is a shimmering, goldenfaçade, demanding attention in Perth, WesternAustralia. The project, stretching oversix levels, is named after the endangeredwhite tailed black cockatoo, indigenous tothe area. Ngoolark stands as an impressive civic buildingthat has brought together the manyfunctions the campus building serves. Locatedat the confluence of a number of importantcampus pedestrian paths, the site posedmore of an obstacle between buildings thana connector. A major level difference wasalso a feature of the site. This was previouslya hindrance but is now an important partof the project’s success. While currently fittedout as primarily office space the buildinghas been designed so that it is possible forit to be easily converted into classroom andteaching space.Embedded within the fabric of the interiorand exterior of the project are a number ofthemes which were developed and broughtto life through consultation with ECU’s CulturalLiaison Officer, from Kurrongkurl Katitjinand the local Noongar community. The first relates to the golden folded perforatedaluminum veil which is wrapped aroundthe three upper levels of the building, theceramic frit on the glazed facade and thecarpet design throughout the building –Ngoolark, the Carnaby’s Cockatoo.The mastery of the design gives the buildinga three-dimensional shape from the street,while becoming completely transparentwhen viewed from the inside.ALUCOBOND^® panels used on the lowerlevels of the project in varying shades ofspectra Desert Gold, Bronze and Gold Metalliccomplement the remaining perforatedexterior, with its similarly shimmering andlight-changing abilities.
