Deutsche Messe Hannover has announced the eighth annual competition for the contractworld.award, the most important European architecture prize for interior design. With total prize money of 50,000 euros on offer, it is also the most valuable award of its kind in Europe. The deadline for submission of entries is 22 June 2007.
The contractworld.award is presented each year for innovative interior design concepts in four categories, which for 2008 are as follows: future work environments; creative hotel, spa and catering concepts; innovative shops and exhibition stands; and buildings that come under the general heading of “Education/Learning/Culture”.
The competition is now seen as an important indicator of the quality of interior design in these categories. The judges are looking for fully realized, integrated design concepts that stand out by virtue of their quality, functionality and aesthetic value, and their innovative treatment of space, materials, colour and surface texture or finish.
In addition two special awards will be presented for the first time in 2008. These will be given exclusively to new-generation entrants (architects/interior designers under the age of 40) responsible for avant-garde projects.
For the 2008 contractworld.award competition entrants may submit design concepts for interiors that have been completed after 31 December 2003. Each of the four categories can accommodate a broad spectrum of entries. Within the hotel industry, for example, wellness suites are becoming an increasingly important selling point.
The availability of attractive spa facilities is now a significant factor when hotels are rated for their amenities and quality of service. For this reason the initiators of the competition have decided to expand the definition of the “Hotel” category to specifically include spa facilities.
The prizes will be awarded on 12 January 2008 at DOMOTEX HANNOVER (12 – 15 January 2008), the world’s leading trade fair for floor coverings. The actual award ceremony will be staged at contractworld, the meeting place of choice for the international architectural and interior design community. In the exhibition area at contractworld manufacturers will be presenting their product ranges aimed specifically at the contract furnishing sector.
Visiting professionals from Germany and many other countries will meet here to form opinions and exchange views. An important part of this networking process is the contractworld.congress with its extensive program of lectures, seminars and conferences. With around 2500 delegates, this is now the largest annual architectural convention of its kind in Europe.
The contractworld.award gives prize-winners a great opportunity to raise their international profile. “The prize helps us to gain credibility. If, like us, you work in the area of speculative architecture, and don’t have many finished buildings to show for your efforts, then an award like this is really important”, says Kamiel Klaase from NL Architects in Amsterdam, who won a contractworld.award in January 2007.
For one thing, all the prizewinning projects are showcased in a special exhibition organized by Deutsche Messe Hannover at contractworld, as well as being documented in a lavishly produced catalogue published after the show.
