Buzzards Bay Design Competition

The Buzzards Bay Village Association is pleased to announce a single-phase, open International Design Competition seeking innovative proposals for up to a 20-acre park with extensive frontage on both Cape Cod Canal and Main Street, Buzzards Bay. The main objective is to create an intergenerational recreation area and cultural amenity for the use of local residents while encouraging downtown economic redevelopment. The Cape Cod Canal railroad bridge, operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers is the most exciting architectural feature of Buzzards Bay and welcomes both land and waterborne visitors. Now we envision a dynamic park project to engage the vibrancy of this historic area of Massachusetts. Participants are encouraged to look beyond the site boundaries at how the project can relate to the adjacent waterfront, commercial and residential areas. The Competition is sponsored by The Buzzards Bay Village Association (BBVA), a proactive group of business owners and operators, town officials and residents. The Association’s primary mission is the development of a strategy for reinvigorating Main Street and creating a village center where families can gather, interact and recreate. The Cape Cod Canal serves over 3 million visitors annually. The Association, in partnership with property owners the Town of Bourne, the State of Massachusetts and the United States Army Corps of Engineers, desires to build the winning design for an anticipated construction budget of $5 - 6 million. Proposals should address the village’s needs in a feasible manner suitable for implementation.

The Competition is anticipated to generate rich and diverse designs that address the following criteria:

Innovative ideas for recreation and other public uses for bridge | park
Emphasize ecology and conservation, especially in the flood plain along the waterfront
Generate new concepts in harmony with the day-to-day life of residents while attracting tourism
Consider the relationship of the site to the adjacent Massachusetts Maritime Academy
Reflect Cape Cod ambience, quality of life, water resources and open space
The need for enhanced connections between the site, the Main Street business district and residential areas to the north of the by-pass
We encourage competitors to provide the most forward thinking, compelling and speculative solutions. All inventive programmatic ideas will be considered.
