denkmal 2026: Rethinking the future of existing buildings

How climate-fit is our building stock? Can existing buildings outperform new construction? And how can traditional expertise, new technologies and digital tools help preserve our built heritage? From 5 to 7 November 2026, denkmal in Leipzig will once again bring together the European community working in heritage conservation, restoration and old building renovation.

The future of the built heritage is facing major challenges. Climate change is increasing the demands placed on historic buildings, while the shortage of skilled professionals threatens the preservation and transfer of specialist knowledge. At the same time, digitalization and new technologies are opening up completely new possibilities for documentation, conservation and restoration.

denkmal 2026 will focus on precisely these developments. Architects, engineers, craftspeople, conservators, heritage professionals and researchers will meet in Leipzig to exchange expertise, discover new technologies and materials and explore practical solutions for the future of existing buildings.

One central question will be the role of the existing building stock in the climate transition. Building with existing structures saves resources, but how can historic buildings be made fit for a changing climate without compromising their heritage value? The fair will thereby explore the relationship between climate protection, sustainability and heritage conservation – one of five pillars of denkmal - while also addressing the opportunities and challenges of transforming existing buildings – the second denkmal pillar.

Digitalisation and technology form the third of denkmal’s five pillars. How digital is heritage conservation today? What can artificial intelligence contribute to documentation, planning or restoration – and where are the limits? denkmal provides a platform for discussing these developments from both practical and professional perspectives.

The fair also addresses one of the sector’s most pressing challenges: the next generation. Heritage education and architectural culture consequently form the fourth pillar of denkmal.. Who will preserve and shape our cultural heritage in the future? denkmal brings together established expertise, young professionals, educational institutions and companies to exchange knowledge and discuss new approaches to attracting and training skilled professionals.

The fifth pillar addresses the question of protecting cultural heritage in emergency situations. Again, climate change plays a role here, as are new geopolitical realities that pose a threat to cultural heritage as well. Connecting and preventing before something happens, learning from those who are already dealing with crisis situations – those are the benchmarks here.

Celebrating excellence in heritage conservation
A special highlight of denkmal 2026 will be the Gold Medal, one of the best-known awards for outstanding achievements in heritage conservation. Since 1996, the Gold Medal has been awarded for exceptional projects, innovative technologies and materials, digital solutions, the preservation and transfer of traditional craft skills, successful approaches to attracting young professionals and outstanding civic engagement.

Five denkmal exhibitors will receive the Gold Medal on 6 November at 12 noon. An independent expert jury will select the winners. The awards highlight the people and organizations whose work helps preserve cultural heritage for future generations.

The 2026 edition will also expand its scope with a dedicated archaeology area presented by CIfA Germany, connecting the preservation of the built heritage with archaeological heritage and current challenges such as the relationship between the energy transition and archaeological sites.

Running alongside denkmal, MUTEC – International Trade Fair for Museum and Exhibition Technology – will take place on 5 and 6 November. The event focuses on solutions, knowledge and networking for the international museum sector.
