Playable International Design Competition

The playableart design goal is to create an innovative and inviting playspace for a city park while taking into account the seven evaluation criteria of the competition. The playspace will be situated on a shady hillside. Unless your design uses the hill as a component the ground will require some building up on the street side. Typically this is a good opportunity to create seating walls and create a safety barrier between the playspace and the street. (This ground preparation will be handled by the Atlanta Parks Department and is not included in the $25,000 project budget.)

It is possible to push out the 37’ (north) edge in order to make use of more of the space on that end of the site. The larger wooded area on the 60’ (south) side beyond the big oak is being set aside for a food kiosk that will be built at a later date.

The main target user group for the playspace is children aged 2 to 7. Most of the people moving into the downtown area typically don’t move in with children, but now the population of babies and toddlers is growing. Room for parking strollers is desired, as is space for parents to sit comfortably so they can easily watch their children. College students and office workers are also significant target user group as this site is close to many of the classroom and office buildings.

In addition to addressing the overall competition design criteria the playableart play structure should be extremely durable and easy to maintain. It should not be seen as an attractive shelter opportunity and good visibility is critical. A system for dealing with graffiti removal would be a plus. The design can be one piece centrally located on the available site or several pieces integrated throughout the site.

Most of all, the play structure should be fun and engaging. Do not limit yourself by thinking of a “playground” as we know it, think instead of “playable art”.

The winning design for the playableart category will be built in Woodruff Park by Central Atlanta Progress and the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District in 2011. They will provide a staff project manager to work with the designer. The designer’s name will be included on a plaque at the playground site. The total budget for building and installing the site is $25,000. Any remuneration, travel expenses, etc. must be included in that amount. Ground preparation, rading, etc. will not be a part of the $25,000 budget.
