Center for Contemporary Art

Genieloods

The competition site is a unique military fort ("Fort bij Vijfhuizen") dating back to 1899. As part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam the fort is both a Provincial Monument and listed as UNESCO World Heritage. Subject of the competition is the "Genieloods" (military barrack) and its direct surroundings. The Genieloods is a steel shed built in 1896, originally used to store cannons and other military equipment. It is located on the premises of the fort.

Challenge
The challenge consists in designing a space for contemporary art exhibitions and related facilities re-using the Genieloods. In fact, the Genieloods will be the future point of departure for visitors of the Kunstfort. Employing the Genieloods will dramatically increase the potential of the Kunstfort as a centre for contemporary art.

Though the Genieloods is a beautiful structure with great potential, at the moment the interior of the Genieloods is not suitable for its new function for several reasons:

- Climate: extremely hot during summer; intensely cold in winter (both for visitors and art).

- Space: at ground level the usable height is limited; at first floor level the tensile bars are to low and make it impossible to walk freely.

Lack of facilities: reception, toilets, café bar, et cetera...

Creative thinking
The competition brief calls for creative thinking in terms of the conception of a high profile yet affordable accommodation within the context of a historic, late 19th century fort. Among other considerations, participants are asked to reflect on and respond to the following questions:

How to conceive a high quality art centre within the conditions of a historic military structure, without jeopardizing its monumental status?

How to envision a space for almost every thinkable type of art (sculpture, painting, audio, video, installation, mobile, performance, etc.)?

How can a design of the new exhibition space enhance overall the exposure of the Kunstfort and communicate its ambition to be a high quality art centre with an international scope?
