The competition’s challenge is to propose a revitalization of a charming section of one of the 19 districts in the Belgian capital city of Brussels.

The designated urban area is part of the commune of Saint Gilles. The competition focuses on the square known as the Parvis De Saint Gilles (in the documentation: "the Square") and the park known as the Carré de L’ Ancien Hotel des Monnaies (in the documentation: "the Carré").

The main considerations

Add a covered market hall to the space of the Square which will enhance the daily market in addition to creating a covered meeting point for various activities.

Revitalize the space of the Carré in order to enhance the area’s urban, social, cultural, and commercial activities appropriate to the area’s function as center- point of St. Gilles.

Create additional housing for up to 150 inhabitants in the heart of the district.

Create a centre for cultural activities such as theater, concerts, meetings, etc.

In spite of the district’s present attractions, there are several empty commercial spaces in the area. Thanks to the project, new businesses should be drawn to occupy these buildings, which will also result in increasing the area’s appeal.

Harmonize pedestrian and vehicular traffic by reintegrating the pedestrian into the city without impeding the activities of the market itself (deliveries, visitors).

Improve conditions for public transportation as well as promote bicycle circulation, in order to reduce dependence on private cars in the area.

Promote equal access for all visitors between public and private areas of the quarter, through the market, and to/from the proposed subterranean parking garage.

In addition to the prizes to students, their universities also receive an award: € 5,000 will be awarded to every nominated school, € 10,000 for the third price, € 15,000 for the second price, € 25,000 for the winner.
