Natural Capitalism

The idea behind the typology of the Skyscraper usually is explained by lack of space, economic demand, and technical innovation. Yet the 'true' genesis of this vernacular of capitalism is actually irrational. The typology of the Skyscraper expresses the potential to reproduce the earth and to create other worlds. Unfortunately this potential is seldom explored. Most high-rises are an endless repetition of floor planes without added significance either inside or out. Faced with today's massive growth of the city, the question remains what conditions could high-rise offer as an alternative to the usual sprawl. The answer is: a Skyscraper offers the best possibility to inhabit the air over the city. Thinking about Skyscrapers as 'inhabited air' helps to re-examine the relationship between living and outdoor space. Elevating living, working, recreational and economic space from the urban fabric creates the possibility to connect all to outdoor space. Moreover organizing life skyward proves it is possible to condense the city and develop new urban ecologies in what is now a uniform field. Developments in Skyscrapers usually totally rely on technology. Yet the most reliable, most sustainable, most efficient and the cheapest technology is low-tech. For cooling one can use shade, convection currents and evaporation. The sun and thermal mass can be used for heating. Exploiting these natural processes in a Skyscraper turns this typology into a very efficient structure. Rethinking the ability of the Skyscraper to create another world helps to develop ways of living vertically that are sustainable.
