The project 'Eigenwijs Eiland' aims to investigate what spatial quality is wasted by ignoring the islands' potential. An analysis of the island in it's context shows unmistakenly how a set of opportunities is ready to be exploited. First of all the island is served with the best of two worlds. On one hand it's part of the Randstad as it is part of the province of Zuid Holland. On the other hand the island presents itself as part of the popular holiday destinations in the Delta. Goeree Overflakkee therefore combines a favoured position in the network, with a recreational add on. The island is a fine mixture of living in leisure near business. As an island it provides a garanteed quietness only 30 minutes from the centre of Rotterdam. The intrinsic qualities of the island are mainly due to the approximity of water. Surrounded by four types of water and three kinds of coastline, the natural diversity is huge. Above all there are three kinds of villages to be recognised. The first type is directly situated on the water. The second one is connected to the bigger surrounding waters by means of a canal. Only three villages do not have any relationship fysical with the waters around the island, which in itself is a surprising quality. The island is a successful fusion of the qualities that characterise the finest 'Waddeneilanden', like Texel en Schiermonnikoog. Seen in this light, it is hardly a surprise that Goerre Overflakkee has an abundance of nature reserves. Given it's position in the infrastructural network of the Randstad and it's intrinsic qualities as an island, Goeree Overflakkee provides potentially the best seats in the theatre: first rank, front row on a private balcony.
